History

It has to be said we've got less history than most but hey this is a good thing as I don't know about you but I've always found history boring!!!!! So, what of our short history? Well we've been going since 1997 yep we're that new. The idea was born from a group called Nyfte (National Youth Folklore Troupe of England, Whose members age from 10-18. So what becomes of the members over 18??? Did they suddenly cease to exist or disappear in a puff of smoke? Some perhaps but not many. Most who have left the group have got involved with other teams or found a life of their own the rest of us decided we liked the idea of performing together and after a sufficient number had become too old we formed our own team in 1997. The team then consisted of 6 members!!!!! Not a lot and for the whole of that year the only thing they got up to was an extended weekend practice over the Easter weekend at a youth hostel in Wantage Oxfordshire. This experience allowed for a testing of the idea and the chance to spend an entire year coming up with a name!! For it was not till late in 97 when the name of Diversity was agreed on by which time membership had changed and the team now consisted of possibly 10 or so people!!!! This number has since been confirmed in the first gathering of 98 when the peaceful town of Wantage was once more invaded this time our accommodation was a church hall when 10 enthusiastic and excited members turned up for the extended Easter weekend practice.

Membership

At present we have 10 committed(to a mad house!) members of the team 9 of whom are ex-Nyfte and one who has known most of us for some time and knows one of our members better than most!!!!!! To find out more have a look at the mug shots!

What we dance

Dance? Oh that thing we do between drinks!! Well as has already been mentioned we mainly dance English Traditional dances all be it with a twist every now and again. These cover things like playford (no really it's not that boring, honest!!!!!), social dances both modern and not so and nearly all forms of Morris so that's Cotswold, Border and Molly but Northwest? NO, STOP THAT IT'S SILLY!!!!!! It is a side policy at present that Northwest Morris is too much like hard work!!!!! We also like to try our hand at Rapper sword dancing and so far have managed to keep those hands in one piece. We have also made up some of our own and every now and again we play a few tunes to allow the dancers to get yet another drink in!!!!  We also can include the odd solo spot or duet type thing like an Appalachian  dance which comes from the large land mass known as America. Oh, and then we fall over!
